Rainbow Fish Sensory Play

For this activity, you will need:

  • Food colouring of assorted colours
  • Rice
  • A bowl (we used a fish shaped tray, but you can always use a normal tray and arrange rice in the shape of a fish)
  • Craft sticks

Divide small portions of rice in different containers. Add a tablespoon of food colouring along with vinegar and let your child shake the container until the rice is fully coated. Spread the rice on a newspaper and let it dry.

Once it is fully dried, make a fish shape by putting a line of each colour you used for the body. I used red for the tail with an outline of yellow. Wooden spoons and shells were used to dish the rice out. I also printed out images of the characters from The Rainbow Fish and pasted them on craft sticks.

I and my daughter both enjoyed narrating the story of The Rainbow Fish and hiding the fish under the rice while using the shells to dig. She continued to enjoy the activity and I even gave her lolly moulds to scoop the rice with.

Enjoy the journey xx
